Offenders and Ex-offenders

How we help if you are an offender or ex-offender

Issues influencing resettlement

For example, when young people leave custody at a Young Offender Institution (YOI) or prison, they may need help and support to find somewhere to live, to sort out benefits or to find help with drug or alcohol addictions. A Personal Adviser could support them in finding the specialist help they need.

Access to opportunities, employment, training, self-employment, voluntary work and education

A Personal Adviser is able to offer specialist careers guidance to help a young person choose the right option for them.

Interview techniques

If a young person has a criminal conviction, they may have to disclose it on an application form or at an interview. A lot depends on how old they were when the offence took place and what kind of sentence they received. Some young people aren't sure whether they have a criminal conviction because it doesn't necessarily mean that they have spent time in a Young Offender Institution or a prison. A Personal Adviser would be able to help them to decide whether or not they needed to disclose a conviction and advise of the best way of doing this.

Making realistic career choices in relation to criminal convictions

Some careers are much more difficult to enter if you have convictions. Our Personal Advisers offer specialist careers advice to support a young person in career planning.
