The Future in South Yorkshire
It's difficult to predict exactly how the job market
will change over the next few years, but it's likely that:
- Very few people will have a "job for life" - it's now far more likely that
you will change career several times during your working life.
- More people will work part time in the future.
- More people may be self-employed.
- More people will be using computers, the Internet, e-mail and other technology.
- More people may work from their homes.
- Fewer people will be doing unskilled work.
- There are lots of routes open to you, so be ready to look at a
wide range of occupations - there are now very few jobs that are just
for men, or just for women.
- You can't afford to stop learning!

- Key Skills are important for every kind of job. These are the personal
skills that you need to be able to do a job well. Employers value them as
much as qualifications, so it's good to be able give examples of them on a
CV or application form.

- Your Personal Adviser will be able to help you make decisions about the kind of
work you would like to do, and whether education or training are the best route forward.
- You need to manage your own career path. As we've already pointed out, in the future
there will be very few jobs for life - so you need to keep thinking about where you want
to go in your career, and how you're going to get there.
- If you want stay within your local area, you'll need to be realistic
about the kind of jobs available. If you are prepared to travel or relocate for a job, there may
be more career opportunities available to you.
