It's difficult to predict exactly how the job market will change over the next few years, but it's likely that:

  • Very few people will have a "job for life" - it's now far more likely that you will change career several times during your working life.
  • More people will work part time in the future.
  • More people may be self-employed.
  • More people will be using computers, the Internet, e-mail and other technology.
  • More people may work from their homes.
  • Fewer people will be doing unskilled work.

Things to remember:

  • There are lots of routes open to you, so be ready to look at a wide range of occupations - there are now very few jobs that are just for men, or just for women.

  • If you want stay within your local area, you'll need to be realistic about the kind of jobs available. If you are prepared to travel or relocate for a job, there may be more career opportunities available to you.
